Couldn't let the snow melt away without doing some painting. Here is my first one, painted from photos on this occasion (because it was flippin' cold out there). It is a smallish oil and acrylic study of a view across the Lincolnshire fen outside Helpringham, where I walk my dogs. Hope you like it.
A painting in oils and acrylics (20" x 16") of the clematis in my garden, May 2020. This was painted under 'lock down' directly from life. Painted on canvas board.
Milk Jug with Pine Cone and Seed Head - April 2020
A still life study in acrylics and oils on canvas board. 40cm x 30cm. I have juxtaposed three simple objects; one man made and smooth and the others from the natural world and textural.
This is an acrylics and oils study of a periwinkle from my garden on canvas board. Approximately 40cm x 30cm. Painted directly from life in April 2020.
This is my latest painting on my theme of still-life. It is my Ginseng plant, painted in acrylics and oils on board. Its about 40cm x 33cm. I've tried to capture the play of light on the leaves the the graceful curve of the plant's structure. Hope you like it :)
A tiny painting (30cm x 23cm). Acrylics and oils on stretched canvas. I was given the theme of 'time'. Just a few short months ago we would never have believed how our society would have been ravaged by the virus, and our lives changed so markedly, hopefully for a short time only. Here is my painting of my poinsettia, which was vibrant and full of life just after Christmas, and has now changed forever.
This is my second painting of the 'lock down'. It continues the theme of still-life and is painted in acrylics and oils. Its a little one, only about 40cm x 30cm. Really pleased with the reflections.
A beautiful white orchid I found, painted in acrylics and oils on canvas board. (20" x 16"). Really pleased with the light and the surfaces of the flowers.
Bought these beautiful tulips from the supermarket and I have tried to capture the sheer impact of their vibrant colours and the energy of their shapes in the vase. Its in acrylics on canvas board (50cm x 40cm). Really pleased with it.
An En Plein Air study in acrylics of a view over one of the lakes at Woodland Water, Ancaster on a warm summer's day as I fought off the insects. 20" x 16" on canvas board
Couldn't resist painting this beautiful view across the fields near Woodland Waters, Ancaster a few miles outside Sleaford. I was captivated by the shadows cast on the fields by the clouds in the bright sunshine and the amazing cloud formations. (20" x 16" acrylics on canvas board).
I've developed the idea of night-time imagery that I started looking at in my painting of Sainsbury's. This is a painting of Sleaford West Level Crossing at night. 20" x 16" in acrylics. Tried to capture the glare of the lights, the shadows stretching across the road and the sense of isolation.
An acrylic painting on canvas board (20" x 14") of a scene next to the river in Sleaford. Coming back to my obsession with sunlight and the natural world. Wanted the single figure to be anonymous but universal, representative of all people. Tried to capture the sense of solitude and immersion in one's own thoughts.
A View of the River Slea near Cogglesford Watermill - May 2019
A self-indulgent painting of the River Slea just along from Cogglesford Mill in all its glory in bright sunshine. I couldn't resist the lush vegetation, the trees heavy with new leaves and the seductive reflections on the surface of the water. - 20" x 16"
A view of Sleaford Sainsbury's at night in acrylics on canvas board 20" x 16". It continues the theme of depicting mundane subjects that might not normally be considered to be 'picturesque' although they have striking visual qualities in their own right. This is inspired by Edward Hopper's 'Nighthawks'.
I parked my car behind me while I painted this scene showing the view towards the river in Shotley so that I wouldn't be run over by passing motorists as I sat with my easel in the road.
This is the second image in my ‘traffic’ series created using a painting knife from photographs. I have tried to capture the play of light in a night time motorway scene near London while exploring the textures achievable through the use of a painting knife.
51cm x 40.5cm. Acrylic on stretched canvas. Unframed.
A very large canvas in acrylics and oils capturing a glorious day towards the Orwell Bridge near Ipswich. I couldn't resist the stunning cloud formations.
My dog depicted on a small scale. A painting knife image with strong back lighting from the window. 40cm x 29.5cm. Acrylic on stretched canvas. Unframed.
Two delightful young women came to the Royal Hospital School to teach and left this world tragically early. The image shows two naval caps (called 'gidges' at the school) at the base of a large candle. A shadowy view of the RHS clocktower places the still-life group into context. In memory of Sarah Lee and Sarah Goodenough. It is said that only the good die young. I expect to live at least another 500 years if all goes well. 30cm x 80cm Acrylic and oils on stretched canvas unframed.
Humanity is a perplexing phenomenon. Some of the coldest and most distant or even superficially hostile people can surprise us with what lies beneath the surface when we take the trouble to get to know them.
50.5cm x 41cm. Oils and Acrylics on stretched canvas unframed.
Students approach education in many different ways depending upon their life experiences and their personalities. This painting explores this notion, using some of my ex-pupils as models.
89cm x 69cm in dark wood frame. Acrylics on primed board.
An acrylic study carried out en plein air showing the river shore near Holbrook Creek. Just managed to complete it before the rain arrived. There are rain drop marks discernible to prove it!
Acrylics on canvas board 61cm x 51cm unframed or 67cm x 57.5cm in oak frame.
